What is a Mastermind Group?
The idea of a Mastermind Group was popularized by best-selling author Napoleon Hill in the 1930’a with his books The Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich. The idea did not originate with him, but he described a Mastermind group as, “A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.”
He also said “a ‘Master Mind’ may be likened to the act of one who connects many electric batteries to a single transmission wire, thereby ‘stepping up’ the power passing over that line by the amount of energy the batteries carry. Each mind, through the principle of mind chemistry, stimulates all the other minds in the group.” He also said, “it is the principle through which you may borrow and use the education, the experience, the influence, and perhaps the capital of other people in carrying out your own plans in life. It is the principle through which you can accomplish in one year more than you could accomplish without it in a lifetime if you depended entirely on your own efforts for success.”
Influential Mastermind Groups
C.S. Lewis is a well known, prolific and imaginative writer, who wrote more than 30 popular books including The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity, and The Chronicles of Narnia, which has sold more than 100 million copies and was even adapted for film.3 While his success is apparent how he became successful is known only to a few.
Lewis was a part of a writer’s group named the Inklings which also included J.R.R. Tolkien the author of the The Lord of The Rings and 17 other writers. The group which met for nearly 20 years gathered every week to share manuscripts, poems, or a new chapter of a book in progress and receive critique, encouragement, advice and more. It was during these regular meetings that Tolkien shared readings of his books and Lewis received feedback on his works.4
Benjamin Franklin also gathered with the same group of friends every Friday night to discuss topics like morals, politics and natural philosophy.5 They called the group the Junto Club, and out of the meeting came proposals for the creation of the first lending library, the University of Pennsylvania, the volunteer militia, and Pennsylvania Hospital among other public projects.6
